About Running Disk Cleanup
Disk Cleanup is one of the built in computer programs that can be used to clean up your hard drive.
It mostly gets rid of those temporary files that accumulates on your hard drive that you don't need, like:
- Temporary internet files
- Recycle bin
- Downloaded program files
- Offline web pages
There are more things it takes care of, but as you can see, these are things you don't need on your computer that are only taking up hard drive space.
It's good idea to clean the disk at least once a month. It's also a good idea to run this program before running Defrag.
It only takes a few minutes to run this program.
Close all programs on your computer and follow the steps below to run Disk Cleanup .
Windows XP
1. Double LEFT click MY COMPUTER to open it.
2. RIGHT click on the "C" drive and select PROPERTIES.
3. Click on the button that reads, Disk Cleanup

4. A new windows will pop up telling you it will take a couple of minutes to search your hard disk for files.

When this initial process is done, you'll see a window like the one below. Put a check mark in any box you'd like cleaned up.
In this example, everything is checked up through recycle bin. You can scroll down to see more items that can be cleaned.
When finished, click the OK button to start the cleaning process.
It only takes a few minutes to run Disk Cleanup.
